Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup – don’t get caught unprepared!

Once again this summer, the world’s most famous sailboats are ready to battle in the splendid crystalline sea of Sardinia, from 4 to 10 September.
The now traditional regatta is organised in collaboration between the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and the International Maxi Association, with the support of the historic sponsor of honour: Rolex.
This appointment, eagerly awaited by yachtsmen from all over the world, is undoubtedly marked on the agenda of the watchmaking world, which between watchspotting, exclusive events and sponsors of excellence, witnesses the perfect conclusion to the summer season.
Let’s discover together the history of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and our team’s suggestions.

What’s the MYRC?

Born under the name “Maxi World Championship”, today is called Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. At the behest of the president and founder of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, His Highness Aga Khan IV, the first edition was organised in 1980.

Quickly established as one of the landmarks of world and Mediterranean sailing, the partnership with Rolex arrived in 1985. After all, what other maison would have been more suitable than the crowned one? From its very beginnings, Rolex invented the partnership with sports, favouring the refined exclusivity of tennis, golf and certainly, no less, sailing.

The event attracts the world’s best sailors and shipyards to Porto Cervo, with numerous Olympic medallists competing, and promises a week of exceptional regattas divided into different classes. Of course, there is no lack of exclusive moments ashore, organised in the splendid setting of the Yacht Club and the most glamorous locations on the coast.

2022 edition

This 32nd edition is preparing to go down in the annals, as for the first time the spectacular sailing hydrofoils, by now the dominators of the America’s Cup, will be present in the race. All eyes will therefore be on Lacorte’s Mini Maxi FlyingNikka, but also on Loro Piana’s Clubswan 80 My Song, which will be officially presented on the morning of 4 September.

Another highly anticipated event is the return of the J Class Ranger, which, together with the J Class, recalls the elegant silhouettes of the boats built for the America’s Cup in the 1930s. Four J Classes are expected, one original and three replicas.

Clue moments will see the return to competition of Cannonball, intent on defending last year’s title in the Maxi72 class, as well as Magic Carpet Cubed in the Mini Maxi.
There are many spectacular boats and crews competing, each deserving of its own article. For a detailed list of participants, please visit the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda website.

What to wear

If you are one of the lucky contenders for the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, or a sailing enthusiast who wants to experience the regatta to the full, the advice naturally goes to the watch developed specifically by Rolex for this kind of event.

We are certainly talking about the Yacht Master II ref. 116680. This watch, incredibly underestimated by the general public, features a special bezel and an internal scale which, by means of the red retrograde pointer, enables the countdown – necessary for the start of a regatta – to be activated.

A watch with a strong personality, which with its 44 mm diameter guarantees perfect readability even in the middle of a tack.
There is no doubt about it: it is impossible to find a more appropriate watch than the Rolex Yacht Master II.

If you prefer to stay on shore, our suggestion is to time the contenders with the help of a trusty Daytona. But the special occasion can only require a watch out of the ordinary: for this, we propose an extremely rare Rolex Daytona ref. 116519.

In the distant sea of Tahiti, an oyster has slowly created the spectacular black mother-of-pearl from which its dial is made. To further embellish this extremely rare watch, the case is made of 18-carat white gold. The leather strap will be perfectly at home at the most exclusive evening events in Porto Cervo, while we believe the Yacht Master II’s steel bracelet would be more appropriate for aperitifs.
The Daytona ref. 116519 is a refined choice to accompany you in the summer, but will give you a private holiday moment all year round with just a glance at the nuances of its dial.

Our team wishes you all a happy holiday and good wind to the participants of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2022.
